At recent meets we have noticed more SBA swimmers without team caps and team suits on showing their team affiliation. It is very important to show your team pride at the meets. Along with the suits and caps there are also warm-ups and parkas available to display your allegiance from the SBA Team Store. Be proud to represent your team and your community……Show your Spirit!

SBA TO HOST AUGUST MEET

SBA will be hosting our next swim meet on the weekend August 7 - 9. This meet is the “JO MAX South” meet at Loma Verde Pool.

This is a very important meet for all swimmers still trying to qualify for the Junior Olympics in August. It is also a short course meet which is much less scary for our newer swimmers. We hope to have a large participation from SBA, even swimmers looking to be in their first “official” swim can enter this meet. We are always looking for potential swimmers to fill out relay spots at the JO’s. Also, by participating in at least one official swim meet during the season you can qualify for a trophy at our annual awards banquet in October.

Another important item is VOLUNTEERS! We need many more parent volunteers to run the meet than we had at our last meet. If your child is participating in the meet you are expected to volunteer your time during the meet. Even if your child is not participating you encouraged to come and volunteer your time as hosting swim meets is a major team fundraising event and benefits the entire team.

We want this to be a huge SBA event!

EASTLAKE BOWL AND TAVERN FUNDRAISER

Don’t miss the SBA fundraising event at the Eastlake Tavern & Bowl on Sunday, July 18. The event is 4 hours of unlimited food, bowling, pool tables, dozens of plasma TV’s and more. The price is now $25 per person and is all inclusive (except alcohol). We must sell 400 tickets to this event so every family must help by either purchasing or selling tickets. There are not many tickets left, any remaining tickets will be on sale at the door. This should be a very fun night for all.

PARENT MEETING JULY 20

There will be a Parent Meeting for parents of all groups at the National City Pool at 5:00 pm. All groups will practice at the NC Pool that day. We will be discussing the upcoming meet and other team issues such as future events, team finances, etc. We strongly encourage all parents to attend this meeting. There will be a fundraising dinner following the meeting at Pat & Oscar’s in Plaza Bonita! Flyer on home page!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

SUMMER NOVICE MEETS

There are 2 more Novice Meets left for this summer season. The next one is this Friday, July 9. These meets are on Fridays during normal practice time and are short and fun for all along with being great practice for when our swimmers start participating in official meets. There is a one time $10 charge that includes all four meets, a latex team swim cap, ribbons for every swim and a neck ribbon medal at the end of the season. The first two meets have already been completed, but there are two more throughout the summer.

The dates are:

JULY 9 SOUTHWESTERN

JULY 30 LOMA VERDE

All meets begin at 5:00 p.m. and will end at 7:00 p.m. whether completed or not.

WESTERN ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SAN JOSE

The Western Zone Championships is the top Age Group meet in the Western United States. All Star Teams are selected from the LSC’s throughout the West and will compete in San Jose, CA on August 10 – 14 at the Frank Fiscalini International Swim Center. To qualify for the San Diego team you must qualify by making at least two long course time standards. This year the team will be traveling as a 13-18 group together with coaches and staff and 12/younger qualifiers will travel with their own families or with a group from their own team. Applications are due turned in July 24 at the NCA A/B meet along with a refundable $550 co-pay. The 12/youngers will get a $500 reimbursement upon returning and submission of the necessary documents. SWIM-A-THON

We will holding our annual SWIM-A-THON August 1^st. This year’s event will be held a little different with all groups swimming on the same day and location. The 12/unders will swim their 2 hour or 200 lap swim from 4:30-6:30, the olders from 6:30 – 8:30. The festivities will include a BBQ, Music and prizes to earned based on money raised.

All groups will be receiving their packets with pledge sheets soon. We need 100% participation to raise the money needed to continue operating our program year round.

All swimmers need a personal counter to count each of their laps, counters need to bring their own chairs.

Let’s make this the best SWIM-A-THON ever!

SBA TO SEND SR. SWIMMERS TO GOLD SECTIONLS

There will be a group of SBA SR. swimmers traveling to Santa Clarita for the California / Nevada Gold Sectional Championships. This meet brings together many of the top Sr. swimmers throughout the region for a final chance to qualify for the National Championship meets.

GOOD LUCK SBA SWIMMERS!

LA JOLLA ROUGH WATER

The La Jolla Rough Water is the most popular Open Water Competition in the country. Each year over 1500 swimmers compete at the La Jolla Cove in various age and distance categories. The event is on Sunday, September 12. You can find entry forms on line at www.ljrws.com or coaches will have some available soon. We will be holding some practices at the Cove prior to the event. Watch for information.

SBA CANOPY STOLEN

At our last swim meet at National City one of our new team canopies was stolen Saturday night. As you travel around town, garage sales, swap meets, etc., keep an eye out for a blue canopy with the South Bay Aquatics logo printed on all four sides.

If we raise enough money at the Swim-A-Thon maybe we can afford to replace it.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS COMING SOON

The Long Course Jr. Olympics are coming soon with only one meet left to qualify. The Jr. Olympics will once again be held at the Coronado High School BBMAC pool on August 19 – 22. We have an outstanding group of SBA swimmers already qualified and more swimmers qualifying every meet. The last qualifying opportunity is ar the JO Max South meet we are hosting at the Loma Verde Pool August 7-9. Don’t miss your last chanced to make our Championship team!

If you have a question concerning your monthly swimming bill don’t ask the coaches. The billing is done by our Treasurer Melanie Hernandez. She has all of the payment and billing records. Payments are due the 1^st of every month. All checks should be made payable to SBA.

IN NEED OF EXTRA MONEY?

Team fees, gas, food, housing, all continue to go up and it is always getting more difficult to make ends meet. The following articles are ways to help your family’s financial situation.

HELP SBA BY BECOMING

AN OFFICIAL

We appreciate our SBA parents that are certified swimming officials, we couldn’t have swim meets without them! We are always looking for parents that are interested in becoming officials for our team. Thank you to the parents that are now in the process of getting certified. We can never have too many officials. If teams do not provide their required number of officials at swim meets there is a fine that is assessed by our Local Swim Committee.

SBA offers financial incentives for parents who become officials and work swim meets for our team. For working just one weekend a month you can have a child swim for FREE!

TIMING SYSTEM OPERATORS NEEDED

We are always in need of people interested in learning to work the team’s Colorado Timing System at swim meets. The timing system brings in over $10,000 a year for our team which helps keep our dues among the lowest in San Diego County.  Timing system operators get paid on average nearly $100 a day depending on the length of the meet.  Currently we have only 3 operators and there are meets almost every single weekend in San Diego county.  Please consider helping your team by becoming a timing system operator...if you can run a computer you can become a trained operator!  Training is available at EVERY swim meet in the county!   We especially need operator's who can also tow the system...any SUV or pickup truck can tow the trailer. Next time you sign your swimmer up for a meet...give Brad Voigt a call at 619-302-1338 and ask him how to become a trained system operator and get paid to watch your child swim!
